I make these from a 1.5-inch block of wood. A 2x4, if you will. The body is cut in half and finished separately. Cutting into two sections does two things. It lets me apply the two shellac colors without masking tape and produces a sharp demarcation line between the amber and clear shellac. I can enhance the line between the parts by sanding the pieces separately, thus adding a design feature. Cutting the toy into two parts does not reduce the strength.
The car body is primarily made from pine, with some walnut trim on the airfoil to add a little contrast. The axles are birch hardwood and have nylon washers behind the wheels. The nylon washers act as a spacer and a bearing preventing the wheels from rubbing on the body and helping the toy car roll smoothly. In addition, during construction, the nylon washers help prevent the wheels from sticking. Wood glue will not stick to nylon.
I made the wheels from pine. I usually do not make wheels when I can purchase them. Making wheels is very time-consuming and makes the toys more expensive to make. In this case, the design called for a slab-style wheel which I did not have readily available, and I thought the handmade wheels would look good on the car.
If my grandson had his way, I would not have any of these in my shop.

I use traditional woodworking tools to make this unique wood toy car from solid wood in my Toymaker's Shop. I hand-finish each car with clear and amber shellac.
