Compound cut birdhouse ornaments are cut using a scroll saw in three dimensions (3D). Multiple cuts are made, and the pieces are taped or clamped back together and cut again from a different side. This cutting continues until finally, a 3D shape emerges. Compound cutting is not for beginners. It requires quite a bit of skill with a scroll saw to pull it off. Both the wood and the saw must be dead on square and straight. Patience and careful cutting are essential. Unlike flat cutouts made on a scroll saw, it is essential to follow the lines as close as possible. Wandering far of the pattern lines can completely ruin the piece.
