In the photo above, I drilled the holes after I cut the body. What you can't see is the wood is broken between the holes all the way through. Imagine how bad it would be if you finished the body first and then drilled the holes—been there, done that.

You could still make a toy from these. However, I sell my toys. This sort of thing is unacceptable, and most of the time, these go into the kindling pile. A few that were not damaged extensively, I have sold at a substantial discount—selling at a loss.

Drill all your holes before you do anything else, especially when drilling wood that is prone to tear out. I've had holes tear out so bad that the piece is not repairable. I've had axle holes break out the bottom of the toy. There are exceptions to this, but I have found very few. The one exception I have currently is drilling the hole for a peg doll in the T-Bucket Hot Rod.
