I made this miniature birdhouse Christmas tree ornament in my shop using traditional woodworking tools from reclaimed wood. I glued together small pieces of wood to create a block of wood large enough to compound cut the ornament in three dimensions using a scroll saw. The ornament is finished with a custom blend of mineral oils and waxes that I apply hot for deep penetration and durability. This ornament could become a family heirloom. The Best Clamp for Scroll Sawing Compound Cuts

 

If you are a scroller, you know how frustrating having your workpiece move while cutting can be. Especially when it comes to scrolling compound cuts, the clamp you use can make all the difference in the world when it comes to the accuracy and precision of your cuts.

After trying various clamps, I discovered that the spring clamp is the best clamp for scroll sawing compound cuts. Not just any spring clamp, but one with a strong spring that can take up the slack as you cut. The larger spring clamps worked best as they stayed in place and aligned the parts.

One of the main advantages of using a spring clamp for scroll sawing is that it will not damage the blade if you accidentally hit the clamp. Many spring clamps are made of plastic composites. If you should hit one of these clamps with a scroll saw blade, the blade would not be damaged.

I made two new sets of these tiny reindeer last night. The antlers are challenging to cut and separate from the wood without breaking them. This time I managed to get them cut without breaking anything.

I used an Excalibur EX21 scrollsaw and Pegas Modified Geometry 3R blades. #3 blades cut slower, but I get a much smoother cut than I would get using a #5 blade. I could probably cut them faster without the reverse tooth blades. The wood used for this herd of reindeer is poplar I purchased from one of the big box stores.

I print the patterns on heavy paper with a laser printer and Inkscape. After cutting the patterns to size, glue them onto the wood using 3m 77 spray adhesive. The patterns are glued directly to the wood. There is no need to remove the patterns since they are on the waste wood. I must mount the patterns straight, or the reindeer will be distorted.

The total time to make these was about three hours.
