These cars are surprisingly difficult to build. The fenders were quite fragile until I had them glued to the body. I broke several of them before I got them all finished. If I make them again they finders will be made from Baltic Birch plywood or shop made plywood. I broke the fenders while sanding.

Getting the holes for the head and tail lights drilled square and true to the front and rear of the car. This is where the horizontal boring featire came in very handy.

To drill the holes I first cut the the blanks square then applied the pattern with the flat bottom of the pattern even with one of the long edges. With the pattern inplace it was easy to mark the locations of the hole using a square and a pencil.

Next I clamped the blank to the Shopsmith table lined up square to the bit, set the depth stop and drill the holes. I your making a batch its best to add somr stops and drill all the same size hole at once. You blanks would all need to be the same size to do this.

I cut these bodies from pine 2x4s but you could glue up some 3/4-inch thick stock to get the right thickness. MDF woul probably work well for the body and it paints much easier than pine.

I purchased the wheels from craftparts.com. While the wheels are strong enough I wasn't to happy with the construction. I ordered just enough wheels to make the cars plus a few spares. I was a good thing that I purchased spares. Several of the wheels had crooked spooks or glue on the outso\ide of the wheels.If I make these again I may not use the spoked wheels or try my hand at making them myself.

This is one of a series of Hot Rod toys I have made. It is one of several I have made from MDF including a complete set I made for my grandson.

MDF has several advantages. MDF is very inexpensive, cuts easily, paints very well and it is quite durable if you are careful about what you use it for. On the downside it produces a lot of very fine dust. My grandson has had his for several years and has not manage to break one although they are covered with dings and scratches from the many crashes they have endured on the race track.

This car was sealed and primed sanded smooth and several coats of Krylon Orange rattle can paint was applied. After the paint was throughly cured I applied a coat of clear glaze.

A beautiful handmade wooden to car carefully finished with childsafe amber shellac and metallic blue acrylic paint. It looks so good I thought about keeping it for myself. I finished this toy car by applying many thin coats of amber shellac sanding with fine-grit sandpaper between coats of shellac.

The most challenging part of making one of these cars for me is the windows. The car's windows are like eyes on a person. If you are painting a portrait and you get the eyes wrong, it will never look right. It's the same with the windows. I cut the windows first. If something goes wrong, I haven't destroyed all my work like I would have if I waited until the end to cut out the windows. I have turned more than a few into designer kindling by cutting the windows last. If you hunt around, you can find similar cars with the round windows you get by using a drill to make the windows. Do they look right to you?

I make these cute little cars in many colors and finishes. There are usually several different versions and colors available. If you don't see anything, you like you can always place a custom order.

I have many of these cars from a variety of materials. I made this one from two layers of 3/4-inch MDF glued together and then cut on my scroll saw. I sanded and sealed the body and applied multiple coats of acrylic paint with a clear glossy topcoat.

I can make these in any color or size. I welcome custom orders.

I can quickly drill this toy car to accept peg people/dolls. I did not drill this one because at the time I made it, I did not have the technique down well enough to get the hole drilled correctly without damaging the paint.

The wheels are made from birch hardwood and finished with amber shellac. The shellac soaks deep into the wood and wears well.

I back all the wheels on my toys with nylon washers. The washers are there as a spacer to prevent the wheels from rubbing against the body. Nylon in slippery and acts as a bearing for the spinning wheels and helps the toy Hot Rod to roll fast and smooth.

I painted the axel hubs with metallic purple acrylic paint.

The exhaust pipes are made from birch hardwood dowels and painted with black acrylic paint with a clear shellac topcoat.

All of the finishing materials in my toys are non-toxic.

I have made many of these toy giraffes. The first one I made was when I was learning to use my scroll saw many years ago. I cut a lot of animal shapes, getting the hang of using my saw. They were nearly perfect practice. We still have a large jar full of those original animals. Today, my grandkids play with them. The giraffe is incredibly durable. It will last for generations.
