While trying to remember if I used a scroll saw when I made mine, I did have one, and I've used it for many other woodworking projects over the years. If I made a Norm Marshall toy today, I would use a scroll saw. You could build these toys with handheld power tools or hand tools.

You'll need to be able to cut precise shapes and pieces out of wood and assemble them carefully to create the finished product. These are handmade, hand-painted wooden toy cars made by me using traditional woodworking tools. I painted the toy with a base coat of white primer and several coats of baby blue, white and red acrylic paint. I then applied clear acrylic to the whole car body. The wheels are finished with amber shellac.

In this series, two cars, a sedan and a coupe are available in several colors in the shop. Custom colors are available on request.

These are great gifts. Use them to decorate a child's room, nursery, or office space.

I make items by hand from natural wood and wood products. They can differ from one piece to the next. The one you receive may differ from the item in the listing photos. Wood thickness may vary slightly from the stated size.

Not for children under three years old or kids still chewing things. If the toy breaks, small parts may present a choking hazard. Small children should not play with this toy without adult supervision.

These cars are surprisingly difficult to build. The fenders were quite fragile until I had them glued to the body. I broke several of them before I got them all finished. If I make them again they finders will be made from Baltic Birch plywood or shop made plywood. I broke the fenders while sanding.

Getting the holes for the head and tail lights drilled square and true to the front and rear of the car. This is where the horizontal boring featire came in very handy.

To drill the holes I first cut the the blanks square then applied the pattern with the flat bottom of the pattern even with one of the long edges. With the pattern inplace it was easy to mark the locations of the hole using a square and a pencil.

Next I clamped the blank to the Shopsmith table lined up square to the bit, set the depth stop and drill the holes. I your making a batch its best to add somr stops and drill all the same size hole at once. You blanks would all need to be the same size to do this.

I cut these bodies from pine 2x4s but you could glue up some 3/4-inch thick stock to get the right thickness. MDF woul probably work well for the body and it paints much easier than pine.

I purchased the wheels from craftparts.com. While the wheels are strong enough I wasn't to happy with the construction. I ordered just enough wheels to make the cars plus a few spares. I was a good thing that I purchased spares. Several of the wheels had crooked spooks or glue on the outso\ide of the wheels.If I make these again I may not use the spoked wheels or try my hand at making them myself.

The idea is to have a lot of smaller toys that will be more attractive to customers that don't have room for larger toys. There are a few of these around, but they are all the same basic design. I am trying to think outside the box and make some unique, high-quality toys that will be different and stand out in the crowd.

I made this little wood car from a decorative design that had no wheels. I enlarged the pattern to fit the size of the 3/4-inch wheels and compatible with the commonly available Play Pal Series.

It would be straightforward to convert this toy to a Christmas ornament. All one would need to do is find the balance point and add a hanger. I think these would look great on a Christmas Tree.

One of the very nice things for me as a toymaker is the ease that I can resize these. I can make them in any size that is required. Another is that it lets me use up the large amount of the small wood pieces I always seem to accumulate.

This design begs for contrasting colored wood. Maple and walnut are the first things that come to mind, but there are many other possibilities, including baking the wood to make it darker.

Colors, kids love the colors. Almost any color you can imagine is available in acrylic paint. My local paint supplier can custom mix paint to match. Then there are dyes designed especially for dying wood.

Personalized toys are possible on a somewhat primitive level. I am planning to get an engraver to do the personalization with in the next year. The problem with doing the personalization by hand is that there is a chance of ruining the toy. If a customer asks for customization, I will usually do it, but I'm not comfortable enough with the process to offer it as an option yet.

I handcraft all my toys from 100% childsafe materials. I sand the car smooth and round over all of the edges. I finish the car body with a finish I make from beeswax, mineral oil, and Vitamin E. The same as you would use on your cutting board or butcher block countertop. This finish will not turn rancid like many oils. If the toy needs refinishing, you can use cutting board oil, mineral oil, or even baby oil.
