This toy car is handmade from natural wood for adults or kids. It is a sturdy, durable toy made for play but nice enough for any decor.

I am offering this hot rod at a discount due to slight damage to the paint.  The paint has wrinkles on it the surface but is otherwise undamaged. The toy functions perfectly and has no other defects. From a distance, you can't tell there is anything wrong with it.

These are great gifts. Use them to decorate a child's room, nursery, home, or office space. One customer used one of these cars for a shower cake topper.

I make every effort to make sure my toys perform well. I carefully test each toy before it is put up for sale.

I make these toy hot rod cars in my toymakers shop using traditional woodworking tools. The 1.5-inch thick body is cut using a scroll saw. I could probably come up with a method to do this with a band saw, but cutting is with the scroll saw, and a #5 reverse tooth blade makes a much smoother cut that requires minimal sanding compared to the cut I can get a bandsaw. The bandsaw cuts fast but requires you to cut outside the line and then sand to the line.

Handmade Wood HedgeHog Family Stacking Puzzle

Handmade Wood Hedgehog Family Stacking Puzzle

This stacking puzzle is part of a large puzzle project that includes 50 puzzles. Twentytwo puzzles are replacements for sold-out stock, and the rest are all new to me, animal family stacking puzzles. I had to modify the hedgehog pattern to get the puzzle to stand up. With the right piece of wood, it might balance on its own, but I had to flatten the bottom using a belt sander to get the mother hedgehog from rolling over and dumping all the baby hedgehogs on the table.  This puzzle is a little tricky to stack, and if you don't know what it looks like assembled, it might take you a while to figure it out and get it to stand up.

Look for this puzzle in my shop soon.

Handmade Wood Toy Airplane Experiment Third Attempt

Handmade Wood Toy Experimental Airplane Version 3

This toy airplane is the last of three experimental aircraft  I built to see how hard it was to do. This one is essentially the same as the second one without the holes plugged with dowels that looked like windows. The parts are fitted much better.

This design would be easy to paint. I would paint everything before assembly, leaving the spots unfinished where the glue goes making multi colors easy.

The prototype airplanes were all turned over to my grandson for testing. The only problem that arose was that one of the skids on the bottom of the wings broke. Being made from wood, this was an easy fix. A tiny drop of glue and a few hours for it to cure, and everything was like new. However, I would very much like a design that doesn't break so easily.

Handmade Wood Toy Airplane Experiment Second Attempt

Handmade Wood Toy Experimental Aircraft

For my second attempt at making my wood toy airplane, I switched to 3/4-inch stock for the fuselage. I prefer the look of the thicker wood. It adds some dimension to the toy, and it is easier for me to make.

In this version, the stabilizer is mounted in a slot. This method is much easier to mount and fit. I mark the center on the stabilizer as an alignment aid. After I dry fit and make any required adjustments, I put a small amount of glue in the slot and slip the stabilizer into place.

I lowered the wing to the bottom of the fuselage and mounted it in a dado-sized to fit the wing. The dado is cut square, and the snug fit makes mounting the wing a piece of cake. I first dry-fit and center the wing marking it with a pencil, making it easy to align after the glue is applied. The pencil marks are sanded off after glue cures.

Attaching the wing in this manner will allow for easy reinforcement if it is needed. However, if the fit is good, reinforcement is not required. I did not use it on this version of the airplane.

I did not add wheels because the toy is too small for any available wheels. Instead of wheels, I glued two small (1/4-inch) skids to the bottom of the wings. The skids worked well, but one of them was broken during testing by my grandson and needed to be reaired. Some reinforcement or making the skids longer might be a good idea.

The circles on the fuselage sides are there because I started to make slots in the body and changed my mind. Rather than cut a new body, I plugged the holes with some dowels and sanded then flush. The dowels turned out to be a design feature. Most people who have seen the airplane think the dowels are windows.

Handmade Wood Toy Airplane Experiment First Attempt

Handmade Wood Toy Airplane

My grandson was interested in airplanes, so I told myself how hard it could be to make a simple toy airplane from scratch. I did not have a simple plan or pattern on hand and made my own; this was my first attempt.

I used a cheap styrofoam glider we had laying around that was about the right size for my purpose. I traced the shapes onto a thin piece of wood and cut out the parts using a scroll saw.

Getting the wing and stabilizer slots cut was a bit of a challenge. Marking the location wasn't a big deal, but the layout for slots was the problem. In the end, I just eyeballed it.

Getting the wings in the slots without getting the glue all over is a bot of a trick. If I were to make one like this again, I would dry fit and mark where the glue needs to be located, Pull the wing out slightly, Apply a small amount of glue and press the wing into place. The fit needs to good but not tight. If it is tight before the glue is applied, the wood fibers will begin to swell as soon as the glue is applied, and there is a high risk that it will get stuck in the wrong place.

I was not too fond of this design, mainly because of the difficulty with inserting the wing and stabilizer in the slots, so I never added wheels.

If I ever build a through the fuselage airplane again, I would Cut the fuselage in half, glue the wing and stabilizer in place, and glue the fuselage back together.

My grandson was quite pleased with the new toy but disappointed that it would not fly like the glider.
