Toymakers Shop Over 200 Axles For Play Pal Trucks

Some people would just cut the axles with a saw and glue the wheels on. Not me. I sand every one of them. They don't look right if the ends are not rounded. I've tried sanding them flush with the wheels, but I found myself damaging far too many finished wheels. Now I only sand them flush with the wheel on those toys where the wheels are easy to finish.

I cut my axles using a jig, and a 26 TPI Japanese saw. It will cut a dowel with a single stroke of the saw. I've seen all sorts of methods used to cut these with a table saw, or band saw. In my book, this is crazy. The dowels splinter and fly all over the shop. Then there is the issue of the dowels trying spin when they are cut and trying to hold a tiny piece of round dowel while you push it through the table saw.

The ghosts are done. If you have bee waiting to get yours, there are now four sets available in the shop. I have lots of Halloween items currently available with more on the way. Ghosts, Jack-o-Lanterns, Pumpkins, Reapers, Skulls, Skeletons, Witches, Spiders, Bats, Cats, Haunted House, and a Big Boo. I don't have all listed yet, so if you don't see something you want, ask for it. I can make these in other sizes.

The ghosts another easy to make project. There are six ghosts in a set and only two holes to drill for each ghost.  Sanding is the most time-consuming part of making the ghosts. Using a good scrollsaw with sharp blades will minimize this. I used my Excalibur EX21 scroll saw and Pegas #3 Modified Geometry blades for this batch of Halloween ghosts. I have been very impressed with how well these blade cut.

I made the first turkeys for a preschool. The kids used the turkeys to make Thanksgiving decorations for their parents. I cut these by hand using a scroll saw. They are four-inches tall, but I can make them in any size. Custom orders are welcome. Please contact me with your needs. If you don't see what you want, ask for it. These are very easy to make. There is only one hole to drill and no internal cuts. The only tricky part is gluing on the wings. They tend to want to move around. If I made a lot of them, I might need to make a jig to position everything, but the most I have ever made at one time is eight. Making a jig doesn't seem to be worth the effort.

 

The pattern is by Patrick Speilman, published in one of his many scroll saw books. I think I own them all.

Handmade Wood Toy Truck On A Spindle Sander

I got in some shop time yesterday. I'm working on a batch of toy trucks. They always seem to be sold out. Inside corners are challenging to sand well, and I try to change the designs so I can use the spindle sander to do the bulk of the sanding in the corners.

There are better spindle sanders available, but they are costly. I particularly don't like the plastic insert on the Ridgid spindle, but it is relatively inexpensive and gets the job done. The oscillating belt sander can be very handy to use on many projects.

I cut this truck by hand using a scroll saw. It was initially painted solid blue as a sample for a customer. The paint on the sides got messed up, and rather than try to fix the paint; I decided to remove it. I then coated the entire truck with clear shellac and buffed it to a smooth finish. The result is a beautiful two-tone color scheme where you get the best of both wood grain and paint.

Originally, this one was painted blue. I did not like how the paint looked so I remover it from the sides. I should have sanded a little more. The camera sees things that my eyes can't . I made the first of these dragons as an experiment to see how small I could cut a dragon and still be usable for something. As a toymaker, I always have small bits of wood around that need to be saved from the kindling bucket. I had the idea that it would make an excellent Christmas ornament and fashioned a hanger to try. Much to my surprise, it was a big hit. Everyone who saw it wanted one.
