A small handmade wooden toy I made from reclaimed hardwood plywood. A sturdy, durable gift suitable for play or decoration. Add a unique touch to home, office, kid's room, or nursery.

These toys are sturdy, durable, pocket-size, and built for play. The small size easy for little hands to carry.

The clear shellac finish provides a durable child-safe finish that allows the beauty of the wood to show through. Shellac is a naturally occurring substance used extensively in food.

My grandson has a lot of these toys in various colors and finishes. He has played with them for over six years, and they are still going strong, outlasting many factory-made plastic toys. Like all my toys, they are grandson tested and approved.

I make every effort to make sure my toys perform well. The axles are sanded smooth, waxed, and nylon washers are inserted between the wheels and the body to ensure the toy rolls smoothly and prevents the wheels from rubbing against the car body. I carefully test each toy before it is listed in my store.

Band Saw Resawing Small Toy Parts With A Small Blade and a Carter Stabilizer

I have two Shopsmith bandsaws, One iron table, and one with aluminum tables. I don't experience drift on either. When I first got my bandsaw in the early 80's I had some issues with drift. This was fixed by switching to a high-quality blade and carefully aligning my saw.  Many things can cause a saw to drift.

Dull or damaged blade. I once had a blade just lightly touch a staple and it immediately started to turn to that side and was useless.  

The blade must match the thickness and material you are cutting. Small thinner pieces an be cut with narrower blades and more teeth.

Poor quality blades. I only use Wolf blades.

Saw misalignment. The table must be aligned square to the blade.

Feeding the wood so fast that it can't clear the sawdust. Let the saw do the cutting. Don't force it

Teeth that are too fine for the material you are cutting.

Using a saw blade for resawing that has previously been used for cutting curves. Your resaw blade should only be used for resawing.

I sure there are some that I missed.

Using Laminations to Make Stronger Toys - Shopmade Plywood

 

The dragon is an excellent example of where laminations would greatly strengthen the wood. I see seven areas that would break easily, three areas in the body and the dragon's feet. I think commercial plywood would look bad, and it is prone to splintering. Even Baltic Birch plywood has the splintering problem.

The tusks on this mammoth are three layers of laminated oak. Shopmade plywood, if you will. I can't break them short of clamping them in a vise and smacking them with a hammer or using some tool to get enough leverage on them. They are slightly thicker than 1/8-inch.

You Need A Lot Of Clamps To Hold A Dragon

 

Nine clamps are holding this one together. There are two Pony hand clamps, three Pittsburgh Ratcheting Bar Clamps, and four nylon spring clamps holding this dragon together, and that is for one side. You need a variety of clamps to do this kind of work. The clamps need to into tight spaces, and sometimes it is like putting a puzzle together.

The Pony hand clamps hold very well and will grip irregular surfaces (dragons toe)due to the flexible pads. These clamps don't twist much, and the pressure is adjustable. The only downside is that they are too large to fit in all the places I would like to use them.

I don't use spring clamps for many things, but they work well for this application as long as they can get a grip without slipping. I wish someone would make these with flexible jaws like the Pony Hand Clamps. The pressure on these spring clamps is not adjustable. You get what you get. I don't like the steel spring clamps.

The Pittsburg Ratcheting Bar Clamps are a deal. You can get these at Harbor Freight tools cheap. These clamps cost $0.99 with a coupon. You should test them in the store before you buy them to make sure they work. They have a lifetime warranty. These are small light-duty clamps that will fit into tight places and are ideal for toymaking. You can't wax the bars because the clamps will not hold if you do. I have waxed bar clamps for years to prevent the glue from sticking to them and help prevent rust. If they slip, try cleaning the bare with mineral spirits.
