When I need a specific piece of wood, say a 1/2-inch thick piece, I carefully go through my stash, measuring the thickness of each piece to find the right one. Sometimes, I measure to determine if I can get two or three pieces out of a single piece of wood, optimizing the material and minimizing waste.
