This workshop photo captures the early stages of creating a rustic wood heart curio shelf using a scroll saw. Laid out on a sturdy workbench are printed paper patterns attached to an oak board, featuring rows of stylized heart shapes, shelves with striped interiors indicating grain direction. Patterns are created on my computer and printed on label paper, eliminating the need for spray adhesives.

 

The heart shelf has seven shelves. I cut extra shelves from the remaining wood and keep the leftover shelves to use on the next shelf. If I have enough on hand when making the next shelf, I can use the wood for something else. I have another style shelf that will fit on this board. I try to arrange the patterns to use the expensive wood as efficiently as possible.

A handmade wooden toy truck is taking shape on a well-used workbench, held securely in place by an assortment of clamps during the gluing and assembly stage.

The main body, a sturdy rectangular wooden trailer, is clamped tightly from multiple directions. Several black Harbor Freight quick-grip style clamps grip the sides and top, applying even pressure to ensure the glued joints set properly. A bright orange Jorgensen bar clamp spans the top, its large padded foot pressing down firmly on the center section because the smaller clamps can’t reach it.

Smaller wooden components are nearby, ready to be added: numerous turned wooden wheels, axle dowels, the truck cab, and undercarriage for the trailer.

The scene captures the satisfying chaos of active woodworking clamps everywhere, slight glue squeeze-out at the joints, and a mix of hand tools and parts spread across a flat marble slab used as a reference to keep all the parts square during assembly. This classic toy truck build is being crafted with care and patience, one clamped joint at a time.
