Handmade Wood Halloween Ghost Cutout - 629418018

A handmade, unfinished 3/4-inch thick Halloween Ghost cut by hand on a scroll saw. It has been lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper and is ready to be painted. Unlike many thinner cutouts, these are freestanding and make good pretend toys.

I made the first batch of these for my grandson, Odin. He is crazy about anything Halloween-related. They are great Halloween decorations, but for my grandson, they are toys. He builds haunted houses from blocks and uses them as scary occupants.

Handmade Wood Toy Monster Truck Play Pal Pickup 519334303

 

Although this toy truck looks simple, it was challenging to make. The body width is right at the maximum I can cut on my scroll saw. I got my finger mashed several times. These are delightful toys for toddlers. Made from 100% hardwoods with the axles pined, they are nearly indestructible. It will be a unique gift for someone special and likely the last one ever.

My grandson has several of these in various colors, finishes, and materials. Despite his rough play, they are still going strong, outlasting factory-made plastic toys.

By pressing down with your finger over the rear axle and slowly applying pressure until the monster truck pops out from under your finger, the truck can do backflips. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but my grandson has made them flip since he was three years old.

My First Scroll Saw was an AMT 1600

 

AMT 1600 Scroll Saw

My first scroll saw was this AMT 1600 purchased in the early eighties.  It used pin-end blades. I soon discovered when I started cutting fretwork that I needed a saw that uses pinless blades. I was able to purchase a modification kit that let me use pinless blades.  Changing blades and making through cuts was a bit of a chore, but I didn't know any better at the time. The saw cut great and was capable of cutting smooth glass cuts in hardwoods. I made toys, fretwork, and chess pieces using this saw. I gave it away a few years ago after purchasing an Excalibur EX21. 

The blower was net to useless an was replaced with an aquarium pump.

The stand was a Craftsman Universal tool stand I purchased from Sears.

There are many AMT scroll saws for sale used, and they will do quite well for a beginner.
