New Etsy Listing - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Green - Gray

Image
Metallic green hubs and gray exhaust pipes on this one.  The colors are acrylic paint with a top coat of clear/blonde shellac. The body and wheels are finished with hand brushed shellac. I had started out try to spray the shellac but with humidity running in the 90% range it just didn't work. The shellac would condense moisture right out of the air. I actually had car bodies that had dew on them after spraying. Right Side Front - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Purple Hubs - Gray Exhaust Buy Now: https://www.etsy.com/listing/555566821/ The original design for this wooden toy car had grey exhaust pipes. I had some gray paint and decided to give it a try to see how I liked them. I think the gray works good with the shellac. This car also has a knot. It's not very noticeable and I've been told there are some people that consider knots a feature. Knots can be hard to deal with so I usually try to avoid them. However, knot on the toy car didn't cause any problems at all. Amber shellac is a good finish to use when leaving knots. It will seal them and sticks well. Some finishes will peal right off a pine knot.       Handmade wooden toy car (Deuce Coupe) for adults or kids. Sturdy, durable, and made for play or decor. Wood Toy Car, Hot Rod 1932 Deuce Coupe, Handmade and Finished with Amber Shellac and Red and Black Acrylic Paint 555549563

While I'm not a fan of the red hubs I have a customer who is. I was experimenting with clear coatings on the acrylic paint and tried some on the flat red hubs the clear/blonde shellac really made the red color pop. After that I really had to see how they looked on the Hot Rod Deuce Coupe. It turned out quite well in a subdued sor of way. There will be more of these in the future. New Etsy Store Listing Hot Rod Freaky Ford 1932, Pine, Amber Shellac, Metallic Green and Black Trim

Image
I've been working on this batch of toys for a long time and just no got around to listing them.  My photography is getting better. The big thing that I figured out was that my camera had no white balance setting for the LED lighting I was using. Th fix was to use a white background and shoot the photos with no adjustment. Just shoot with the camera's automatic mode and then load it into Gimp and use the white color picker to set the color levels. Works like magic.  Right Front - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Green Right Side - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Green Right Side Rear - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Green Left Side Rear - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32 Deuce Coupe - Pine - Amber Shellac - Metallic Green Left Side - Wooden Toy Car - Hot Rod Freaky Ford - 32...

Can I use my belt sander to sand toys?

Image
The 90% sanding on this little truck body was done using two belt sanders. A Shopsmith 6x48 belt sander with a worn 80 grit belt and my Delta 1x42 strip/belt sander with a silicon carbide 220 grit belt. It's about as smooth as you can get pine. Wooden Toy Truck Sanded With Belt Sanders I use the larger Shopsmith sander to do the heavy work an smooth out the flat areas and in this case remove the finish from the recycled wood. Then I use the Delta belt sander to fine tune and do the final smoothing. It takes a little practice an a light touch. Even 220 grit belts can can chew of a bunch of wood in a hurry. It is sort of like carving with a sanding belt. I can literally reshape the toy as I;m smoothing it. As for the 10% I eased the corners with a foam fingernail file. If your hand is steady enough you could do this with the bet sander. However, I can't control the wooden toy well enough to give me satisfactory results. I sanded inside the window with a shop made scrol...

Play Pal Bat Car With Red Wheels - On the Toy Makers Bench

Image
Playing with color on the wheels.  The blue hubs were what I had made up already and they don't look bad but I think black would look better. The hubs and wheels have two coats of acrylic paint and one coat of shellac. Big surprise for me was how the red color really pops the red paint. not only did it make them glossy but the red color now looks more intense. Play Pal Bat Car With Pink Wheels - On the Toy Makers Bench

Image
I'm playing around with colors because the kids like the colors. My personal experience and that of people who sell at craft shows tells me this. Adults tend to go for the wood grain and the kids go for the bright colors. I have this bright pink paint I'm experimenting with so I decided to see what it would look like as wheels. Black was the only axle pin color I had that worked with the pink. 2017-08-05 14.13.07 Wooden Toy Car - Bat Car - Pink Wheels The body is pine with several coats of amber shellac. The Wheels are painted with pink acrylic and top coated with clear shellac. The hubs are black acrylic with clear shellac on top. Odin's Toy Factory #odinstoyfactory #woodentoycar #handmade
